Field Plate 06: Thornscalius
Study path: Uncertain Hybrids
Expedition journal: Drs. Jonathan and Amelia Blackwood
A bipedal reptilian figure carries a crown of sharp spines above a plated torso. Yellow limbs, a curled tail, long claws, and segmented-looking joints create a tension between animal movement and engineered structure. Smaller studies frame the central figure as part of a larger anatomical investigation.
The Blackwoods' Working Theory
The Blackwoods ask whether the plates grew with the creature or were added to it. Thornscalius makes that distinction difficult: its defensive silhouette looks at once biological and constructed, leaving the relationship between adaptation and intervention open.
Part of BBairt's fictional illustrated expedition into a kaiju kingdom where nature and technology reveal traces of an ancient civilization. These field notes expand the artwork's imagined world; the specimen's origins remain open to discovery.
